Map view of St Moritz

Engadine valley

St. Moritz is one of the best-known and most prestigious ski resorts in the world, especially since having hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 and in 1948. Today the name 'St. Moritz' stands for a 'chic, vibrant and elegant' town, second home to the rich and famous, enjoying a special atmosphere and a dry, tingling champagne climate! St. Moritz lies on a sunny terrace in the heart of the Engadin Valley in Graubunden and is influenced by three cultures: those of the German-speaking majority of its residents, the Romanish-speaking population of the Engadine and the nearby Italians.

Mountain info

St. Moritz originally rose to importance because of its healing mineral springs, which have been appreciated for over 3'000 years. As long ago as The Middle Ages, visitors came to St. Moritz to take the waters in summer. St. Moritz recently had more visitors in summer than in winter and offers plenty of outdoor and indoor activities.

The Swiss National Park in the lower Engadine Valley is among the country's best hiking areas. Or you can go biking; bike paths circle the lakes of the Engadine Valley, and follow the thoroughfares among the most interesting towns. St Moritz also has riding stables where you can rent horses to carry you through the spectacular mountain scenery. Mountain climbing is also a very popular past time though not for the faint hearted! For the water sports enthusiasts amongst you, there is also plenty to do! You can go white-water rafting and shoot the rapids on the En river from June through September, or just go sailing – Engadine’s 25 lakes offer ample opportunity.

Spectacular mountain scenery

If you want to go a little further afield check out Silvaplana; an unspoiled Swiss mountain village on the shores of Lake Silvaplana, near Lake Champfèr, just 6 km/4 mi southwest of St Moritz. Recently the lake has become very popular with kite-surfers and the hundreds of kites darting around the skyline make a very pretty sight!

Getting there?

St. Moritz is a few hours away by car and train from Zurich and Milan, but the way to go is by private jet - there's an airstrip just outside of town. If your wallet can’t quite stretch to the private jet, we recommend you check out the usual suspects: Easyjet, Ryanair, BA, Swiss, Bmibaby, Flybe and Thomsonfly. For car rental we recommend ebookers.

Please note that St Moritz also features on our site as a Ski destination.
